![]() ChatGPT has no handle on the truth, so even when answers are fluent and plausible, there is no guarantee they are correct. It has other, more fundamental limitations, too. For example, ChatGPT knows nothing in the world post-2021 as its data has not been updated since then. Unlike older chatbots, ChatGPT has been designed to refuse inappropriate questions and to avoid making stuff up by churning out responses on issues it has not been trained on. It is also harder to corrupt than earlier chatbots. The result, according to Elon Musk, is “scary good”, as many early users – including college students who see it as a saviour for late assignments – will attest. It is a bit like predictive text on a mobile phone, but scaled up massively, allowing it to produce entire responses instead of single words. Known in the field as a large language model or LLM, the AI is fed hundreds of billions of words in the form of books, conversations and web articles, from which it builds a model, based on statistical probability, of the words and sentences that tend to follow whatever text came before. The program is the latest to emerge from OpenAI, a research laboratory in California, and is based on an earlier AI from the outfit, called GPT-3. The answers are confident and fluently written, even if they are sometimes spectacularly wrong. Ask ChatGPT a question, as millions have in recent weeks, and it will do its best to respond – unless it knows it cannot. It does this by drawing on what it has gleaned from a staggering amount of text on the internet, with careful guidance from human experts. Essentially a souped-up chatbot, the AI program can churn out answers to the biggest and smallest questions in life, and draw up college essays, fictional stories, haikus, and even job application letters. Since its launch in November last year, ChatGPT has become an extraordinary hit. ![]() These included a 6.4 L engine rated at 470 hp (350 kW 477 PS) and had four-piston Brembo calipers, slotted rotors, paddle shifters, SRT launch features (such as 0-60 timing, Live G-Force readings, and ¼ and ⅛ mile drag timers), custom seat embroidery as well as other features. No matter what you think of the strength of the art, you can admire the strength of the person who made it. Yet the much smaller group of people who know about her as an artist, a musician, and an activist appreciate her integrity. Her art is exhibited around the world: last year at the Serpentine, in London (“ Yoko Ono: I Love You Earth”) this year at the Vancouver Art Gallery (“ Growing Freedom”) and the Kunsthaus in Zurich (“ Yoko Ono: This Room Moves at the Same Speed as the Clouds”). Whether she sought them or not, though, she has both. Like any artist, Ono wanted recognition, but she was never driven by a desire for wealth and fame. She later called it “maybe my first piece of art.” She would ask him what kind of dinner he wanted, and then tell him to imagine it in his mind. Ono later said that she and Keisuke would lie on their backs looking at the sky through an opening in the roof of the house where they lived. Here’s a tip: Book matching works best with quartz slabs that have noticeable, bold veining. All the homeowner needs to consider is the type and intensity of the veining they prefer, and book matching is a breeze. However, engineered quartz does have regular patterning that repeats, an important consideration as you choose quartz vs. MSI’s marble-look quartz replicates the veining of natural quartz, which means that it appears random, as it would in nature. But, what if we’re not working with real stone? What if we are using engineered slabs of modern quartz?īook matching is possible with engineered quartz countertops too! In fact, book matching is even easier with modern quartz than with natural stone. Traditionally, this involves taking two slabs of the same stone and lining up the edges so it creates a mirror image. The natural patterning of stones such as marble, granite, and quartzite opens up creative opportunities in designing your home décor - including book matching. ![]() This seems to be true even if the skin is damaged, for example, sunburnt.Īll in all, if you've found a Zinc Oxide sunscreen that you are happy to use every single day, that's fantastic and we suggest you stick with it. But luckily, so far research shows that sunscreen nanoparticles are not absorbed but remain on the surface of the skin or in the uppermost (dead) layer of the skin. We wrote more about nanoparticles and the concerns around them here, but the gist is that if nanoparticles were absorbed into the skin that would be a reason for legitimate health concerns. Still, it's white and disturbing enough to use Zinc Oxide nanoparticles more and more often. Pinnell, it's slightly less white than TiO2. It leaves a disturbing whitish tint on the skin, although, according to a 2000 research paper by Dr. It's also often used to treat skin irritations such as diaper rash.Īs for the disadvantages, Zinc Oxide is also not cosmetically elegant. So much so that Zinc Oxide also counts as a skin protectant and anti-irritant. It's also highly stable and non-irritating. It protects against UVB, UVA II, and UVA I almost uniformly, and is considered to be the broadest range sunscreen available today. The first main difference is that while TiO2 gives a nice broad spectrum protection, Zinc Oxide has an even nicer and even broader spectrum protection. ![]() It's definitely one of the best UV-filter agents we have today, especially in the US where new-generation Tinosorb filters are not (yet) approved. The English translation is, so far it looks like sunscreens with nanoparticles do stay on the surface of the skin where they should be.Īll in all, Titanium Dioxide is a famous sunscreen agent and for good reason, it gives broad spectrum UV protection (best at UVB and UVA II), it's highly stable, and it has a good safety profile. A 2009 review article about the safety of nanoparticles summarizes this, "to date, in-vivo and in-vitro studies have not demonstrated percutaneous penetration of nanosized particles in titanium dioxide and zinc oxide sunscreens". But do not panic, these are concerns under investigation. Once absorbed they might form unwanted complexes with proteins and they might promote the formation of evil free radicals. The main concern with nanoparticles is that they are so tiny that they are absorbed into the skin more than we want them (ideally sunscreen should remain on the surface of the skin). The itsy-bitsy Nano-sized particles improve both spreadability and reduce the whitish tint a lot, but unfortunately, it also introduces new health concerns. The cosmetic industry is, of course, really trying to solve this problem and the best solution so far is using nanoparticles. Sunscreens containing Titanium Dioxide are often hard to spread on the skin and they leave a disturbing whitish tint. The disadvantage of Titanium Dioxide is that it's not cosmetically elegant, meaning it's a white, "unspreadable" mess. Regular sized Titanium Dioxide also has a great safety profile, it's non-irritating and is pretty much free from any health concerns (like estrogenic effect worries with some chemical filters). Its protection is very good between 290 - 350 nm (UVB and UVA II range), and less good at 350-400 nm (UVA I) range. Anyway, it doesn't matter if it reflects or absorbs, Titanium Dioxide is a pretty awesome sunscreen agent for two main reasons: it gives a nice broad spectrum coverage and it's highly stable. |
